The Butcher’s Hook – seriously delicious nosh, service to match and super child-friendly!

Thanks to the demands of modern life, our family seems to be spending less and less time together recently. On weekends, as we juggle chores, homework, classes and shopping, those couple of hours when we do manage to sit down and spend quality time together are becoming more and more precious. That’s why when we venture out for a family Sunday lunch, we expect total perfection – child-friendly, great food, service, affordable, parking….

Well, last Sunday, we got the whole package albeit a bit further afield in the neighbouring Hammersmith – The Butcher’s Hook Ravenscourt Park.

Their sister pub in Fulham has been around for a while and has a great reputation. The team tell us this the atmosphere in this branch is slightly more relaxed and more popular with families on the weekends. Indeed, they have only been open for few weeks but the place is buzzing with families with kids of all ages. I am very happy to report that it is dog-friendly too! First impression is great – simple but cosy décor, big farmhouse-style tables, fireplaces – just the kinda place we have been longing for. A big plus is the walled garden with seating and big blackboard for children. We got seated promptly and the kids got crayons and paper while we delved into the menu. The lunch and dinner menus change every day, and there is an all-day blackboard menu of small plates. The Sunday menu looked mouth-watering. We kicked off with a home cured gravadlax, shallot & caper dressing at £7.50 (delicate, fresh and zingy) and deep fried truffle macaroni & cheese at £4.50 (little heaven, best mac-n-cheese we have easily had in years!). Bread and butter come complimentary and totally delicious.

The children’s menu, available from 12 to 7pm, is £6.50.

Sausages, mash, carrots & gravy
Penne & tomato sauce
Grilled chicken, fries & baked beans
Fish goujons, fries & peas

The eldest went for the grilled chicken (and ended up scoffing the baked beans which she had refused for years before!) and fish goujons went to the toddler.  Portions are very generous. Both chicken and fish were cooked to perfection.

There was more chicken on that plate but it was gone before I got my camera out!

For mains, we ordered 10 oz Chargrilled rib-eye steak on bone, chips, salad, Béarnaise at £23.50 (they happily swapped my chips for greens) and roast sirloin of beef served with roast potatoes, carrots, mixed greens, Yorkshire pudding, gravy and horseradish at £17.50. The rib-eye had plenty of marbling and was delicious. Béarnaise sauce – a little pot of heavenly velvety richness. The greens (kale, broccoli and broad beans) were lovely too. The roast… Where do I start?  Something out of this world – massive Yorkshire, 2 generous slices of most delicious pink, melt-in-your mouth beef, amazing roast pots and other trimmings and all generously topped with a rich, sweet gravy. There was no chatting all over sudden, just collective purring… I have to say, they have a great selection of wines. The recommended Rioja Reserva, Dinastía Vivanco, Spain, 2007 went down very well indeed.

We were too full to have a “proper” dessert. The kids got a scoop of vanilla and chocolate ice-cream (£1.50 per scoop) and my husband went for the lemon and blood orange sorbet (also £1.50 each). Impressive stuff!

Special mention must go to the team. Service was impeccable! The owners Laura and Gus and the team clearly care a great deal not just about the quality of the food but also about the atmosphere and are very keen to ensure everyone has a good time.

We did have a fabulous time and we will definitely be back – might even leave the kids at home and enjoy that wine properly!

Thank you, the Butcher’s Hook team, for your kind invitation, lovely meal and great Sunday afternoon – 5 stars from Mumsnet Ealing!
